Strangely enough, after working through all of the intricacies of writing (or commissioning) a fantastic resume, putting your employment references document together can seem like an afterthought. Please be aware that taking your references lightly can be a huge mistake.

“Managing” your references actually falls under the category of networking and is an ongoing activity regardless of your current employment status. You should talk to people who would be your reference at least once or twice a year to exchange “life updates”. They should be current with you and vice-versa. The results are that you will reinforce their enthusiasm for you, confirm that your contact information for them is correct, and learn if any changes have occurred in their professional lives. The “Reference” relationship is often reciprocal as you would also serve as a reference for them. Regular contact enables both of you to provide a better service for the other when needed.

Start Your Job Search With Your References

Anyone who qualifies as a good enthusiastic reference for you may have even greater value to your cause. When you finalize your decision to look for a new position, kick-off your search by contacting your references. Call and announce that you are beginning a job search and will be listing them as references. Next, in a conversational tone, give them a little background on what you’ve accomplished in your current position and what new position you will be looking for. Finally, ask them if they know any company, individual or recruiter who is looking for someone with your skills. What better reference can they give you than a personal referral, right?

Remember, managing your references is an ongoing “Networking” activity and as such, you can use these bi-annual conversations to inquire about any current or pending job opportunities that they may be aware of. These inquiries may reveal potential upgrades for you to pursue even if you are not currently looking. In the current job market you should consider this practice to be part of your overall career management plan.

Additional Reference Tips

List 3-4 professional references from recent employers and include their position/title, the name of the company that they each currently work for, their business address, email and phone. Also, it is a good idea to write a sentence or two outlining what their respective companies do.

Lastly, it is no longer considered appropriate to state, “References are available upon request” at the bottom of your resume. Instead, be sure to bring extra copies of your resume and references sheet to your interview. Of course, use good quality resume paper for both.
